Overview

All new leaders at the credit union attend the general new employee orientation, but after this, no leadership-specific training existed. As a leader, there are numerous tools and skills needed to be successful in their role. The Leadership Onboarding Program was built to bridge this gap and provide leaders with the necessary tools and training.

Design & Process

The design went through a few iterations during the development process. It was first built as a 1-session program to teach leadership skills such as servant leadership, and our basic company information (mission, values, etc.). It then developed into a more robust program with specific leadership policies, procedures, and programs. Some of these topics include signing authority, navigating the HRIS system, and corporate credit cards. The final iteration is a 2-session onboarding: 1 session is conducted immediately after orientation for the critical skills, and the 2nd session is conducted one month after with skills needed further into their role. After each session, participants are enrolled in a video demo course built using Camtasia and Rise. These include demo videos for navigating manager tools such as expense reports, approving time off, and annual appraisals. The videos assigned after session 1 are the critical items they will need to be familiar with quickly. The videos assigned after session 2 are the less critical items, but still important to learn for their role. This method helps scaffold the content to prevent cognitive overload. Additionally, a page was built on our intranet for all leadership resources; this is a one-stop-shop for leaders to find answers to the most common questions that will come up.

Final Product

The 2-session program is designed to be engaging and interactive by including videos, discussions, a scavenger hunt, a guest speaker, and more. Each leader is also provided a participant guide to take notes in and complete activities throughout the class. The program utilizes chunking and scaffolding to present information in an organized manner, while the integrated activities help learner engagement and retention.
